Help! Historic An Post Letter Box Stolen From Killoughternane, Co Carlow.
An Post, Carlow County Museum and local historians are upset by the recent theft of an out-of-service post box from a wall at Killoughternane in south County Carlow.

- the An Post letterbox, stolen from Killoughternane, Co Carlow.

The historic box, has not been in regular use for some time and, thanks to the initiative of the Carlow Historical & Archaeological Society (CHAS), was on the point of being removed by An Post for presentation on long-term loan to Carlow County Museum. When the contractor arrived this week to do the work, he found thieves had already been at work and removed the box from the surrounding wall.

An Post’s Assistant Secretary, Stephen Ferguson, said “Post boxes are wonderful examples of historic street furniture and it is very disappointing that someone should steal this piece of local history and deprive Carlow people of a part of their heritage.”

Dermot Mulligan, Curator of Carlow County Museum, said that the Museum had been looking forward to taking in such an interesting piece and displaying it for the benefit of everyone. “People”, he added, “have a strong association with institutions like the Post Office and the aim of the County Museum to try to preserve, where it can, interesting examples of local history for future generations.”

The robbery has been reported to the Gardaí but if you have any information please report it to the Gardaí in Borris, 059-9131505 or any Garda station.
