Carlow’s ‘Great War’ dead remembered

Today in 1918, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marked the end of World War I. The formal peace agreement known as the Treaty of Versailles was signed in June 1919.

In excess of 200,000 Irish people fought in the war, across many regiments and armies from around the world with over 35,000 giving their lives.

In 2002, we believe that the first all-county World War I memorial on the island of Ireland was unveiled in Leighlinbridge, County Carlow, listing over 500 Carlovians who died during what is referred to as the Great War and the war that would end all wars.

Today at 11am people came to the Garden of Remembrance to pay their respects to those people who died and served in this war. A colour party of the Carlow UN Veterans stood to attention at the memorial while they laid a wreath along with Robin Harvey, British Legion, and Paul McGuire, Carlow Military Museum.
Paul also spoke at the event saying that we must remember these people as they are from County Carlow families and many are our relatives. Martin Nevin coordinated the event and George Kidd, St Laserian’s Cathedral, read a reading. The memorial is based on the Menin Gate memorial in Ypres in Belgium.
