Carlow County Museum featured in ‘A History of the GAA in 100 Objects’

Looking for an ideal Christmas pressie??!! A History of the GAA in 100 Objects by Siobhan Doyle has just been published by Merrion Press and is out now.

There are two objects featured from County Carlow, both from Carlow County Museum, the Haughney Cup and the Unofficial Programme for the 1944 All Ireland Football Semi Final between Carlow and Kerry.

There are two objects featured from County Carlow, both from Carlow County Museum, the Haughney Cup and the Unofficial Programme for the 1944 All Ireland Football Semi Final between Carlow and Kerry.

Further delight is that the beautiful Haughney Cup has been chosen for the front cover (see below). According to the book it “…offers a new perspective on the GAA by assembling a range of objects from every county in Ireland, as well as overseas, to present a chronological history of the GAA that also functions as a social history of the people who have been involved in it.”

We display the Haughney Cup courtesy of Carlow GAA County Board, to whom it was presented in 1922 by Michael Governey, Chairperson of the Carlow Urban District Council. The Haughney Cup is named after Denis Haughney, who tragically died in 1922, from his injuries received during a Carlow Championship match while playing for Graiguecullen against Palatine. He received the injuries from an accidental clash with one of his teammates, Willie Hogan. In October 1922 Michael Governey, well known businessman and politician, presented the beautiful Haughney Cup to Carlow GAA. The trophy soon became the Carlow Senior Football Championship trophy until 1953 when Ballymurphy lifted it for the last time. It was replaced by the Fr Lalor Cup, which is also on display in the Museum.

(it’s rumoured that the author will feature on the Late Late Show tomorrow night!)
