A Night at the Museum

To celebrate Halloween Carlow County Museum, working with Ceatharlach Creatlachs and Scarefest Carlow had a fantastic “Night at the Museum”. Four tours brought visitors on a spooktacular meet-and-greet with some of the spirits of Carlow past!

Nurse Margaret Keogh (L) of Leighlinbridge is considered to be the first non-combatant casualty of the 1916 Rising. Her story was told by Eimear Kelly.
Judge Mary O’ Toole (R) of Bagenalstown became the first woman to hold the office of Municipal Judge in the United States, as played by Emma O’ Brien.
Benji Brennan (L), Seanachaí extraordinaire, spellbound visitors with his gripping story of how Douglas Hyde made it to Ireland’s first-ever Fèis! He was played by Michael Somers.
Barney Hennessy (R) recalled tales of his time during the Great War and was played by Kevin Tynan.
The young Kevin Barry, executed at the age of 18 in Mountjoy Jail, was played by Feargal Ward. The song ‘The Ballad of Kevin Barry’ was beautifully sung by Tony Corcoran.
Capuchin Monk Albert Bibby (R) was played beautifully by Damian Brett described to us the various aspects of the stunning 1916 Commemorative Stained Glass Panel installed in 2016 by artist Peadar Lamb.

 

 

 

Our resident archaeologist Tomas Skinner played an pre-historic caveman from Carlow. He regaled visitors with explanations on which animal brains are best for treating animal skin, and how to mix dung and clay together to make the perfect home!

Marc Grogan (L) took on the dual roles of Rev. Samuel Haughton and Carlow’s 19th Century Pulpit.
Lizzie Byrne (R) told tales of her time working in Governey’s Boot Factory, and was played by Mary Griffin.
